The Honors in Action Project

By participating in a chapter’s Honors in Action Project, members have opportunities to apply learning and practice real-world problem-solving by developing an in-depth, action-oriented project related to research of an Honors Study Topic.

Academic research into the themes related to the Honors Study Topic is what makes Phi Theta Kappa’s honors program unique and defines the difference between Honors in Action and simply action. Honors in Action is action informed by research, which makes a lasting impact and contributes to the betterment of society.

Check out our At A Glance page for a look at the steps involved in implementing an Honors in Action Project.

2017 THEME: HOW THE WORLD WORKS: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES

This year the Omega Gamma Chapter voted on the idea of water conservation, "WTF: Water The Future."  Freshwater scarcity is increasing all over the world, even here in El Paso, Texas.  Based on research and studies, we are using our freshwater from the ground way faster than its recharge rate.  This means we are drying up our lands for irrigation, eventually we will need to dig deeper water wells, and according to the El Paso Water Utility Company (http://www.epwu.org/water/water_resources.html) we are expecting to start importing a portion (about 5%) of our freshwater demand from Dell City, Texas by the year 2050.  Who do you think is going to have to pay for those pipelines? Tax payers!  Most importantly, lack of freshwater supply is a problem that many other countries have been dealing with for years.  Children are being educated that the Earth's surface is about 70% water, but the fact that less than 1% of it is safe, is being left out.  Children are the future; they need to be taught the habits of water conservation now, in order to guarantee a future at all.  Scientists are working on projects, such as desalination plants, but those are projects that will take time and money.  We need to start making a change today because we may not have a tomorrow at the rate we are burning through our freshwater supply.
